EMERGENCY FIRE EVACUATION: Albany County, Wyoming
http://inciweb.org/incident/2970
“Incident Overview
- Size is approximately 500 acres and growing.
- Fire is burning in the Squirrel Creek drainage on the Medicine Bow National Forest, Laramie Ranger District; approx. 2 miles south/southeast of Lake Owen and 3 -4 miles west/northwest of Woods Landing, Wyo.
- It was discovered Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m. and is actively burning in beetle-killed timber.
Red Flag conditions and exceptionally dry fuels are contributing to active burning and fire growth.
- Ground crews worked into the night on Saturday to complete burnout operations in order to remove unburned fuels with the intent to aid in containment efforts. Air resources also worked to slow the fire’s growth yesterday.
- On Sunday fire personnel have assisted the Sheriff’s Department in evacuating residents and the Public from the Fox Creek Road area.
- The Albany County Sheriff’s Office has issued evacuation notices for residents along the Fox Creek Road.
- Pre-evacuation notices remain in effect for residents of Woods Landing, Fox Park and Albany.
The Code Red message to residents of these areas said: “The Squirrel Creek Fire between Fox Creek Road and Highway 230 is unpredictable. We recommend that all be prepared to evacuate on short notice. This is a pre-evacuation notice that should be taken seriously. Please do not call dispatch at this time.”
- Currently there are several engines, a Type II Initial Attack crew, and misc. air resources assisting with the fire. Additional crews and air resources have been ordered. - A Type 3 Incident Management Team is currently managing the fire. - Additional/periodic updates will be posted to this site as information becomes available.”
GET OUT NOW. People are being evacuated to the Albany County Fairgrounds and there will be a Red Cross Community Briefing at 10 AM tomorrow at the community center. I’ll be going live on 93.5 FM in Laramie shortly with the Red Cross. This fire is growing very rapidly. DO NOT mess around and get out now.
Highway 230 is experiencing closures, keep that in mind. Please share this info.
